WERO is a group stop smoking contest running in New Zealand.
This WERO app allows you to see who is winning. Follow your favourite teams, get some hints and tips for stopping smoking and learn about the traps and triggers you can encounter.
WERO is based on Māori and Pacific strongly family based culture. Thus we have teams of people quitting together rather than individuals. Māori and Pacific communities love a competition. Our communities are always fund-raising for children’s schools, church groups, and for cultural and sports teams. WERO gives communities a chance to raise money for good causes.
Make sure you also check out Stub It Out – a free iOS game designed to complement the WERO challenges.
WERO was designed by the University of Aucklands WERO study team: Dr Marewa Glover, Dr Anette Kira and Nathan Cowie of the Centre for Tobacco Control Research, with Dr Chris Paton of the University of Aucklands National Institute of Health Innovation. The WERO app has been created with help from Debra Warren, National Institute of Health Innovation Programmer and Laura Wilson, Graphics.
The WERO study was undertaken as part of New Zealands Tobacco Control Research Turanga (www.turanga.org.nz) funded by the Reducing Tobacco-related Harm Research Partnership co-funded by the Health Research Council of New Zealand and the Ministry of Health.
